May 14 IPCAS General Meeting, 7 PM. Dr. Payson Sheets.

Topic: Joya de Cerén. See the article on Page 2.

At the ruins of Cerén, a World Heritage Site, in a lush valley near San Salvador, corn cobs, thatch fragments, and carbonized beans are being studied. That wouldn't be surprising in the arid Four Corners, but in a tropical jungle/war zone for a bean to survive 1400 years required being buried under 16 feet of scalding, fine, wet, volcanic ash. Called a "New World Pompeii", Cerén is revealing Mayan pottery from AD 500-800, complete with finger-swipes indicating eating habits. Storerooms contained pots, tools, obsidian blades, 3 kinds of beans, seeds of cotton and cacao, corn, squash, avocados, palm fruits, chilies, nits, and the meat of deer and dog. Researchers conclude that the people of the region were living far better in AD 600 than they are today.

April Meeting

IPCAS members and visitors were greatly disappointed when Dr. Doug Bamforth was unable to attend, although through no fault of his own. Dr. Bamforth writes,

"As all of you know, I was scheduled to give a lecture at the IPCAS meeting on Thursday April 9 and I did not get to the meeting. I am writing this to offer my apologies. I had taken my children for short late afternoon hike in the foothills and got a flat tire which I could not remove from my car (a mechanic had put the bolts on too tightly for me to remove). Between one thing and another, I was unable even to get back to my home in Longmont until nearly 8:00. I am truly sorry to have inconvenienced so many of you".

Doug Bamforth

Dr. Bamforth has agreed to present the same topic in November.

Volunteer Opportunities for 1998

If you are interested in any of these projects, please call the designated project contact or Tom Cree at (303) 776-7004.

Project: Big Rock Site and Wind River Drainage

Location: Estes Park Private Property, YMCA of the Rockies, Rocky Mountain National Park

Date(s): July 11 and 12, July 18 and 19, July 25 and 26.

Description: This is a project with significant information for the archaeological record involving the movement of ancient peoples from the plains through the foothills and into the mountains. Dr. Robert Brunswig will be the Principle Investigator for the Big Rock Site excavations. This project will have work into 1999 and, probably, into the year 2000. Approximately 40% of the work at the Big Rock Site has been done. Most of the site has only 50 cm of soil above bedrock. An additional part of the project will be a survey from the Big Rock Site up the Wind River Drainage to the Continental Divide. This portion has not been detailed in either work scope or schedule. A dig supervisor for the Big Rock Site and another supervisor for the Wind River Drainage survey are needed. If you are interested in performing one or both of these tasks, please contact Dr. Brunswig. The YMCA will not be able to provide lodging during the excavation but is available for meals.

Volunteers, to date (for one or more weekends): Maureen Arthur, Norma Boslough, Tom Cree, Becky DeAngelo, Connie Duras, Christy Edwards, Brandon Geer and Jessica, Kris Holien, Jackie Johnson, Matthew McCarthy, Mariah Martinez, Jim Morrell, Martha Patterson, Sarah Payne, M. Alex Rainey, Becky Trembley, Laura Wake, Pat Wales.

Project: Cabin Recording and Evaluation for the National Forest Service

Location: Boulder County Mountains

Date(s): May to October. Survey on occasional weekend days during the summer, weather and snow-cover dependent. Records search and report generation performed on weekdays.

Description: Our chapter has a volunteer agreement with the Arapahoe and Roosevelt National Forest Service to

perform Class III cultural resource inventories on cabins that have been relinquished back to the NFS. A report is generated on each cabin. Included in each report are: general area and site descriptions; photographs of the cabin and associated buildings; location map(s); results of a pedestrian survey for historic and prehistoric archaeological evidence;

results of information searches in county, state, and federal records; and information searches in numerous libraries.

Volunteers, to date (for one or more weekends): Warren Bradshaw, Tom Cree, Floyd Edwards, Connie Duras, Mary Folsom, Jackie Johnson, Steve Langell, Mariah Martinez, Jim Morrell, Martha Patterson, Sarah Payne, M. Alex Rainey, Paul Rutter, Donna Shay, Becky Trembley,.

Project: Magnolia Survey

Location: Magnolia area between Boulder and Nederland

Date(s): May to October. Survey on occasional weekend days during the summer, weather permitting.

Description: We have the Magnolia Survey, a project involving a pedestrian survey and test excavations on mostly-private land. The Magnolia area is located above Boulder, on the way to Nederland. Preparations are being made for activity on this project in 1998, with follow-up investigations in 1999. If you are interested in participating in this project, please contact Steve Montgomery or Jim Morrell.

Project: Rocky Mountain National Park Survey

Location: Estes Park

Date(s): July 7-11, July 14-18, July 21-25, July 28 to August 1.

Description: The PI for this project is Dr. Robert Brunswig. He writes, "The current job for this summer is to survey about a 1000 acres from the main headquarters to Beaver Meadows. Following years will concentrate on other park and meadow areas, moving up into the alpine by the end of the project. I'll be bringing back some former students (now in contracting or graduate school) for crew chiefs and will be hiring some of my current students". He adds, "We have limited camp and parking facilities and some folks may have to park at the headquarters and "car-pool" to the camp area. We may be able to have tent spaces (only) for 2-4 additional tents - in addition to our field crew tents. There will be a porta-potty at the field camp. Field food (at least raw materials for meals) will be provided for volunteers. We don't have a budget for per diem or mileage since this is a contract project, though. Our survey area this year is from the headquarters at the park entrance to upper Beaver Meadows. The degree of walking difficulty will be relatively minimal. I do need to limit volunteers in any day to 5-6 people since I will also have a permanent 10-person field crew".

Volunteers, to date: Maureen Arthur, Norma Boslough, Warren Bradshaw, Tom Cree, Christy Edwards, Floyd Edwards, Kris Holien, Jackie Johnson, Jim Morrell, Sarah Payne, Courtney Porreca, M. Alex Rainey, Laura Wake.

The Calumet - 15 Years Ago

The Denver Chapter is sponsoring a field trip to the Four Corners area, visiting the Aztec and Chaco Canyon Ruins as well as the Zuni Reservation. Louise Derr, Program Chairman, has arranged for the Certified Surveyor #1 Module, "Prehistoric Lithic Description and Analysis", to be taught in Longmont on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. She is also making arrangements for a flintknapper demonstration during a potential Saturday session. Members of the Lyons Chapter were invited by Wm. Hammond of the Denver Chapter to assist in there dig at the Ken Caryl Ranch.

The Calumet - 10 Years Ago

A survey day was held for the chapter at Beech Aircraft. The regular meeting was held on May 31 - the speaker was Bob Nykamp and his topic was, "The Volunteer Program in the Routt National Forest, and How You Can Participate". Larry Riggs, Chapter Librarian, wrote that an anonymous donor gave a significant number of books to the library. Larry also received some project reports from the Forest Service and the BLM. The chapter was selling visors - eggshell colored with hand-painted brown and white petroglyph designs (the cost was $7.00 plus shipping).

The Calumet - 5 Years Ago

The regular meeting was held at the NIST Auditorium with Michael Burney speaking on, "The Archaeology of Dowe Flats". IPCAS was planning a group excursion to the Swallow Site in June. Ann Hayes was coordinating the volunteers for the Swallow Site trip. Volunteers were requested for salvage excavation and analysis of seven prehistoric hearths in the 4th of July Valley. Steve Montgomery was coordinating the volunteers for the 4th of July Valley activities on July 5th to 10th. The Eighth Annual CAS Encampment will be held at Lost Park, Routt National Forest Ranger Camp, north of Craig on July 2-4.
